In February 2020, it was announced that Jenna Ortega had joined the cast of the film, with Megan Park directing from a screenplay she wrote. In April 2020, Maddie Ziegler joined the cast of the film. Other notable cast members include Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean, the fearless and widely loved leader of Vault 33 known as the Overseer, and Niles Fitch as Vada, a high schooler who navigates the emotional fallout she experiences in the wake of the nuclear decimation.
