Born in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, Johnson's athletic journey began as an all-around athlete. He played football, basketball, and baseball at Northwestern State University, where he became a Southwestern Athletic Conference All-Conference selection in multiple sports.

After his playing career, Johnson transitioned to coaching, where he quickly rose through the ranks. He led Oklahoma State University to three consecutive bowl appearances before taking the helm at the University of Miami in 1984.
